Not sure if everyone's already seen it but this is a great read from Nilay Patel: http://thisismynext.com/2011/04/19/apple-sues-samsung-analysis/

    From Nilay's post:

I mean, if Motorola can sell 50 million of their stupid RAZR phones, then Apple should be able to sell as many iPhones as they can ramp up to manufacture in the next couple of years!!

The RAZR was a smash because it was very stylish (which the Apple iPhone will certainly be, too). But it also has been huge because every carrier has had it available on subsidy, and it's been available in more than one color. Something I don't expect from the iPhone.

It's also been such a huge seller because they are junk inside. I imagine every time a carrier has to replace a RAZR because it was insured Motorola counts it as another "sale".

We need unions to protect people from abusive BS like this (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/12/walmart-contracted-warehouse-workers_n_848262.html). Either that or we just need to have a limit on how big a company can get before it has to become the property of the employees.

Yay for more unions and government intervention!

Dear government, at somepoint sinss the 18th centory, we've become completely incapable of taking care of owwselves. Wood you pweez do evwyting for us? I don care iv you suk at it, cuz we are helpless wichout u

    Head Shot. Well done. :apple:

+1 Mall Cop Hall of Fame

And popping a headshot on a guy in a moving car trying to run you over isn't luck... something tells me this "mall cop" hasn't always been a mall cop.

You aren't a graphics professional, I take it.

Glossy screens are, indeed, typically better than the "diffused" screens. Diffused screens prevent glare by adding a layer of diffusing material that scatters light to avoid the "mirror" effect. The problem with this is that it also scatters the light coming from the monitor. This reduces color contrast and vibrancy greatly. Put a diffused and glossy MacBook Pro next to each other. The difference is immediately obvious.

With glossy screens, the image from the monitor isn't diffused, which gives you a virtually wider gamut with much better color contrast and quality. Of course, because it's glossy, you'll have to make sure your environmental lighting doesn't interfere with it.

So, for instance, if you're a filmmaker with a PowerBook for on-site video editing, you might want a diffused screen if you do a lot of outdoor work. If you're a designer that uses a desktop screen in a controlled studio/office environment, you'll want a glossy screen.

Of course, regardless of coating, LCDs have a much wider color gamut than print, so it's really not that important whether or not your screen is glossy or diffused, as long as it's a quality monitor if you're a print designer. For true precision color work, DTP pros go with insane monitors that would make your wallet cry. Most of those screens have glossy coatings. TV work relies on insanely expensive "reference" monitors for emulating the "average" TV with precision.

This is a great start for Apple and should help sway studios that are still on the fence. Doesnt mean I'm biting though, only thing that'll get me to seriously think of buying a movie would be nothing less than a 720 x 480 reso. I might get impulsive if there are more offerings. Maybe.

I think Apple should seriously consider offering rentals too. Its dumb not to try it out :)

Why do people seem convinced Apple won't release something like an SLR or video camera?

If you'd followed the dSLR world at all over the past two years, you wouldn't ask this question. :) Canon and Nikon are doing well; most everyone else is dropping like flies. Sony is trying to pick up the pieces that were Konica-Minolta's dSLR business, but at best they're going to be a distant third behind the Big Two. Pentax and Olympus are holding on as far as I know, but they are not doing well.

It would be a very poor move for Apple, and I have no doubt they realize this. You might think Apple has a rabid fan base to draw on - go read any "Nikon vs. Canon" thread on any photo discussion board sometime to see REAL rabidity. :D

Stupid, just stupid. You can't possibly trademark App Store.

Putting two generic words together to form a generic term generically shouldn't be legally trademarked.

How often have you seen a music store named Music Store, or a food store named Food Store.

The part you should be able to trademark would be with your company name in front I.e Pheonix Music Store. Therefore no one else can call their music store Pheonix Music Store.

A store that sells apps cannot be trademarked as such, unless it featured a brand prefix like Apple App Store, Microsoft App Store, Amazon AppStore etc.

Example, if Amazon trademarked Amazon AppStore then this would prevent RIM from opening an AppStore in the Amazon forest called Amazon AppStore.

    See?

Likewise, Tasty Food Store, there could be only one. But Food Store itself, no.

This seems like apple did a very bad compromise. I am suspecting that apple will not allow other source music. It would be pretty hard to confirm if that is the song to give you access to the song on their online copy. I doubt they will do an unlimited access either.

Because of Apple's actions, Creative can now legitimately force other MP3 player makers to pay too. I think this is what Apple wants.

Exactly... including MS if they use a similar enough UI.

    [Will MS be sued too?]
If it's UI infringes on the patentt, sure. If it doesn't, why sue?

Given that the patent is on metadata-based navigation, being able to slice the music files [on a portable player] by artists, albums, and playlists, do you really have an inkling of a suspicion that Microsoft's Zune player will not infringe?

I'll give MS the benefit here for the moment, but unless they've come up with a radically new way of interacting with your music that actually works, they'll either license/infringe on Creative's patent, or they'll produce a player no one knows how to use.

IMHO, it is pretty much a certainty that Zune will infringe on Creative's patent until Microsoft comes to licensing terms, just like just about every other player out there right now that manages more than a hundred megs of music does. The most likely alternative is a "flat" folder-based navigation system, which will pretty much equate directly to resounding market failure, and as stupid as MS makes us believe they are at times, they aren't that stupid!

What about the Container Store, which is trademarked? Seems like the difference is whether or not the term is in common use before the trademark is filed.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but can you, (or anyone,) provide a link to something showing "Container Store" is TMed?

    Update;
I can find "The Container Store" but not "Container Store"

    I don't think that's sad.

Humans are pre-programmed to take such an action hard. Some don't, usually as a result of contemplation and training before such an incident. It is, however, natural to react that way. Best for all to recognize different people may take such a grave matter very differently, and that's ok.

Yeah, my sentiments exactly. This seems pretty useless, at least for me. I can't get too excited about it.

Hard Drives are mechanical, they die. I would personally use this as a backup and to listen when I am at work. I can have access to my entire music library from multiple devices. I have a 16gb iPhone, my entire library will not come close to fitting on that.

Unless that guard's life was in danger, there was no reason to shoot anyone, especially in the head. The placement of that shot was no accident.

That being said, I'm sure there are a lot of facts we don't know. Innocent until proven guilty, of course.

Your last paragraph is the only one you should have posted.

40 shots were reported to have been exchanged. FORTY. I'd say lives were most definitely in danger, and a trained law enforcement officer is not taught "shoot to hurt." You take down your target and end the ordeal.

The question was, "yeah, so what". How does this factor into this discussion?
