To those bitching a few threads back about no jobs - well, at least the lawyers and linguists get a job.

This is a bigger deal than people realize: somebody EMPLOYED a linguist! Unfortunately, he has a Ph.D. in English (linguistics concentration), not linguistics itself, so I'm not really sure it counts.

I have to say, I kind of agree with Microsoft on this, much as I like Apple, but I'm interested to see how this plays out.

    Kernel
A privilege checking issue existed in the i386_set_ldt system call's handling of call gates. A local user may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges. This issue is addressed by disallowing creation of call gate entries via i386_set_ldt().

Generating a successful malware from that list of vulnerabilities has two requirements:

    1) A remote arbitrary code execution vulnerability has to be linked to a local privilege escalation vulnerability.

    2) Those vulnerabilities that can be linked together must both be exploitable. Not all vulnerabilities are exploitable.

The only local privilege escalation vulnerability in that update is shown above. To be linked to a remote vulnerability to create a successful malware requires the following:

    1) The call function must be used by a process that also has an remote vulnerability so that the vulns can be linked together to install a payload, such as rootkit. It is likely that not all processes will use that call function. Also, that call function is for 32-bit processes and most client side software in Mac OS X that may contain a remote exploit are 64-bit processes.

    2) The two vulnerabilities have to be reliably exploitable once linked together as well as being reliably exploitable independently so that they can actually be linked together. Again, not all vulnerabilities are exploitable.

Linking together remote and local exploits is more difficult in Mac OS X than Windows. This is because Windows has far more local privilege escalation exploits than Mac OS X. Another factor is that the different levels of Windows are less insulated from each other than the different levels of Mac OS X. A common method to achieve privilege escalation in Windows is by manipulating registry values.

http://www.exploit-db.com/bypassing-uac-with-user-privilege-under-windows-vista7-mirror/ -> outlines how to exploit win32k.sys vulnerabilities by manipulating registry values.

This is laughable at best. I would not want to be the one who decided it was a good idea to make a prediction this far out. Far too many unknown factors will happen between now and then.

I hope it isn't O2, that would be a shame. To be honest, any network lockins would be bad.
My vote would be Orange if I had the choice.

I've found that through expansys.com and mphone.co.uk i can get anything sim free, sometimes even before it's launched on the network.

that's how i got my current smartphone.

    i REALLLLLLLYYYYYYYYY hope its orange...

as the choice of mobile phones they have at the moment is the poorest i have ever seen in the UK.

ive been waiting on a p990i since march.....still dont have it on orange, was told yesterday it could be end of october now.

i am gauranteed a free upgrade on any handset, so come one apple!!

I got fed up waiting for the P990, and ended up getting a free upgrade to the SPV M600. I wasn't a fan (read "I loathed") Windows Mobile until I got this phone. It's fantastic.

The only thing the P990 does that the SPV doesn't is video calling. And, to be honest, I've got a lot of friends with 3G phones, and not a single one has ever used the videophone feature.

    :)

Looks like the iPods are still at 5G with some tweaks, which is weird considering they had a whole year. I feel no urge to upgrade my current model no major difference for me. Search functions would be pretty sweet though. Wonder why they didnt just give the current 5G iPods that feature with a software update.

The new nanos look really tempting. a 4GB silver would go nicely with my PB.

my thoughts exactly... there aren't that much of a difference, right??

anyway, hey, are the search functions gonna be attainable for the last 5gen ipod as well ? with the software update??? i wish that's the case......please

i've been desperately looking for the reasons as to stick to the old 5gen which i bought just yesterday

I think he was referring to the older versions of Office that had weird MDI interfaces for Word and Excel, so that it only displayed one document at a time, unless you explicitly forced two separate instances of the application to run at the same time.

I think Intel's support for both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 will be a good thing in the end.

    new here to the forums.

i've been patiently waiting for the MBP to be updated before i ordered but wanted to jump on the iPod deal as well which ends the 16th

if one was to place an order and then these are announced the following week, would Apple upgrade you to the comparable machine?

If you happen to be a student programmer type, getting an ADC student membership ($100) may interest you... the current MacBook Pros, and most other Apple hardware, is 20-25% off as a one time order.

I believe Apple has been waiting for all the planets to align. If there is going to be a movie service there will be a true "video iPod".

They were whipped in the ass last time for the boom box release, they will be looking to gain back face this time around.

Android is a huge rip-off of the iPhone, that's obvious. Very early Android was more like a RIM or Symbian-looking thing and when the iPhone appeared it quickly started copying the heck out of that.

BUT - when the iPhone introduced the world to full touch screen phones, how else could someone make the same sort of device without it being a lot like an iPhone? Menus, icons, applications, grids... none of this is exactly new...

I can't stand Android and the layer of pointless fluff like HTC Sense that gets in your way with useless graphical nonsense and widgets. When I got a Desire after an iPhone 3G I thought I had a killer phone and 'got one over on the Apple tax' and would enjoy 'mulitasking' and 'openess'.

For five minutes.... Then I realised iOS is far more usable - even though the Desire was way faster with its 1gz processor much of the old iPhone 3G felt slicker. It makes sense not to have a layer of crap over the basic OS. It makes sense to ration multitasking so the phone doesn't bog down. Music playing on Android is rubbish. The iPhone dock is cool.

That's not to say everything on Android isn't good - in some cases auto text reflow would be GREAT on Safari.

Apple should just ignore the Android cloners and continue to innovate- and offer stripped down slickness as Android gets more and more overwrought.

You do realize that a bare bones Android OS looks nothing like iOS.

I guess I've got mind whip lash from the transition to Intel. It's still kinda hard to wrap the mind around these speed improvments. I'm still used to the very modest speed bumps from the PPC days.

How wonderfully refreshing it is to see these leaps in speed with each product update. I hope this pace keeps up. Some may disagree, but I think it's spectacular compared to what we used to get from Moto/Freescale/IBM.

Nonsense. Maybe at the very end, but we used to see updates like 800mhz-->1Ghz. That's a 25% increase in performance (if processor power is the limiting factor). Even the G5 went dual 2.0 --> dual 2.5 in one jump, which is a bigger increase than this.

This is NOT the promised 20% increase; it's a 10% increase. Some areas may show more, but that only means that some show less.

I'm just not sure why everyone is so impressed with these imacs. The 24" was a great addition (and the low-end 17" for $1k is nice too), but the 17" and 20" are the same as the old models except for a processor speed bump and 1 GB RAM standard. All that for less money is not bad, but it's hardly thrilling considering that it's the first update in 8 months.

If the cloud is left as just an option, then i'm all for it. So long as the iTunes store also exists in the format it is today. I have a massive music collection currently sitting at around 140GB and constantly growing. I like owning copies of the music. Not to do anything illegal with, but I like being responsible for the music. I can already take my music collection with my wherever I go. It's called my iPod Classic. I already have my entire iTunes library backed up. It's called Time Machine. I think SYNCHING via the cloud and having it there as just an option is a great idea, for people who want it, but if they made it cloud only, and took away the ability to download then that would only increase the level of piracy in time. Very much like DRM did. Record companies thought this was a great idea to restrict usage and prevent piracy. Turned out more people were turning to pirated music because of the restrictions that had been placed on them.

To sum up. The cloud should be an OPTION, not compulsory.

Assuming they release it tomorrow, would it be available at the apple store right away(not the online store)?

Usually, Apple tends to make newly announced product available in their retail outlets as soon as it's announced, or quickly there after--within a day or two of the announcement.

Of course, there have been excpetions to this rule, so Apple might announce upgrades tomorrow with availability dependent upon when shipments arrive from overseas.

Who knows? Perhaps those shipments came early and they're already in the back rooms of stores ready to hit retail tomorrow. Prudence dictates though that we'll probably see upgrades to current lines in the next two to three weeks. Being hopeful for tomorrow is probably just a pipe dream.

I think Apple does realize that by adopting Intel as their chip supplier, it is necessary to stay current with new technology, but I also think they don't feel the need to announce/release products with that new technology as soon as their competitors do. Apple takes a very laissez faire attitude towards public appearances concerning their competition with Microsoft and other PC manufacturers. They certainly do care what those companies are up to, but they're going to pretend that they don't really care. It's all part of their marketing strategy since the whole Think Different campaign began. Therefore, announcing their upgrades so close to the competition announcing theirs, kind of doesn't make sense from Apple's marketing standpoint.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. :D

Whatever. Someone will be more than happy to come along and fill the gap, if they haven't already.

Let's see, that's, what, two developers who've decided to pack it in. That's not a "wave of discontent" or whatever it's supposedly being touted as. Esp since more developers have no doubt joined in the same period than have walked. This is the nature of this kind of thing. Not happy? Fine. Leave. Nobody's making you stay. It was your choice to get involved in the first place. Take your ball and go home.

The Doomsayers can go ***** themselves.
