Microsoft is doing OK, now with Office and Windows 7. All of these are quite major successes for them. Windows Phone 7 still seems a bit shaky to me, but with the Office suite and Windows doing well now, they're OK. That they're beat by Apple is simply because Apple is doing far better than OK - not that MS is doing poorly. MS has their core products doing well -- Apple is grabbing large parts of markets, hardware (iPhone, iPad) as well as software (iOS). Both at once, when they've been big in neither before. That difference is sure to show up in the revenue. :)

Or you could just buy a multi-port Thunderbolt adapter(that supports USB 3) for less than $10 when they are released making your half-baked scenario completely worthless.

Considering that the iTS is like the 5th biggest music vendor, they sure suck at selling movies. 125k is nothing compared to real movie vendors.
Maybe when they get more than 75 movies. Amazon unbox started with like 2000 movies!
Are you serious? This is their first WEEK of doing it, what do you expect? And how many movies did Amazon sell in their first week? I'd bet it was less than Apple. Good selection won't overcome crappy implemenation.
I guess people value convenience over quality. That's great for Apple. That confirms it will be a success.
For me I rather buy DVDs or wait for hi definition downloads, but I guess many people out there are satisfy with lower quality.
From what I've heard, the quality is pretty close to DVD. Have you compared the two? What is your complaint about quality?
On my DSL connection, it took about 7 hours. I let it go overnight.

So Apple pays $100mil, and it sounds like Creative may be getting out of the iPod competition biz... and into the iPod accessory biz (which is probably more lucrative).

When considering the fact that you presumably would not get the DVD extras, the quality would not be as good (based on compression/encoding) and you'd be watching it on a small screen, that does seem rather steep. It would be one thing if it was a high quality HD version or something, which you could also view on a normal TV as well, but that wouldn't be feasible either due to the resulting file sizes and longer download times required.
It will be interesting indeed to see how Apple handles this service...

I like to see some benchmarks against G4 machines and see if they make me pull the credit card out.
They've done that in this benchmark, tho only on the Speedmark test:
Speedmark 4.5 scores are relative to those of a 1.25GHz Mac mini, which is assigned a score of 100.
If you go by that, the new iMacs are about 2.5x faster.

Why? Thunderbolt is essentially an external PCI-E port.
But, why should one have to buy a ThunderPort to eSATA hub and a ThunderPort to USB 3.0 hub and clutter my desk and waste two of my precious daisy-chain positions just to have some ports that are common in un-Apple systems?
ThunderPort is cool, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be useful to simply build in common ports.

Yeah, I hope when the new video iPods come out, storage capacity will be up'd as well. Honestly though, I've so many movies and tv shows on my 30gb video iPod right now, I don't think I'd need much more than a 60gb if I were to upgrade.
On my 30gb video iPod I've got stuff like all 3 of the LOTR Extended Edition movies, around 150 eps. of various Star Trek tv shows, about 30 Kids in Hall eps., all 3 Star Wars films, tons of music videos, a couple of Harry Potter movies, an anime flick, a bunch of Sealab shorts, some South Park eps. all of the Indiana Jones films, and a few more things. I still have over 7GB free for music as well.
Having an even bigger capacity drive on my iPod video--I'd go nuts. :)

New nano will have to have a new name, or more than 4gb in the low end, otherwise it will be available as part of the get a free ipod campaign... i don't think apple will do that. Reminds me of a certain SNL skit.
or... mb and mbp will be upgraded to C2D... the rebate clearly lists only core duo systems as eligible. then you won't be able to get any free ipods except with a mac pro

I agree that $14.99 is way too high for a downloadable movie. Most retailers sell new DVD releases on sale for the week they are released, usually for $2 - $3 less than that -- and that's for a DVD! $9.99 is doable, but not $14.99. :rolleyes:

Samsung is a 'chaebol' corporation, a conglomerate. The company is HUGE. It would be the equivalent of Apple/Microsoft/Blackberry combined + TSMC/Global Foundries + Shipbuilding + Property Real Estate + Electronics, etc. Not only that but Apple gets their A4/A5 chips + flash memory manufactured at Samsung fab plants.
This is the GUI wars all over again... Last time Apple sued Microsoft for copying their GUI desktop to make Windows....
(and no Xerox didn't invent that they invented windowing not really a desktop Apple did that bit.)
Anyway Apple lost and Microsoft took over the world while Apple dwindled to a market share of less than 5%.
