    ... between you, the uber-eager-Apple-poster -- and -- the guy-who-represents-the-other-90%-of-Apple's-revenue.

Yes, while *every* *single* *one* of Apple's bread-and-butter customers aspires to be like you, the truth is, (s)he's not -- instead you'll find her/him getting by on her/his basic broadband + CRT TV + non-Home-Theatre System +local Best Buy and Blockbuster.

Apple relies on the pioneers (that would be you) to take the arrows, but on the 90%+ of follow-on homesteaders to get the land (and generate the revenue).

But, speaking as I am as one of "you," that's the way it should be in any Cult! :)

I too would love the collection/library to increase, but for me, the cost of a DVD is virtually the same. It is not like music where you can buy one track off an album.I have a fairly high end system with a 50" HD Plasma, and just got the 80GB iPod which for me is only for music. I love to take a whole collection on the road with me. 20,000 songs!!!.

I also have a pretty good size DVD collection and the quality and lack of limitations for me to play that DVD ....ANYWHERE is worth a few more bucks. The music I already play at home from my iMac and backup hard drives and even though not the same quality as a CD. it is great for background music or parties.

I also live in a fairly big City (San Francisco) with one of the best record stores in the World: Amobea Music, where I can trade or sell the CDs or DVDs that I don't want. They have the most extensive collection of new and used DVDs of anywhere I know.

So say I buy a turkey or simply tired of a film, I can sell it for maybe 3 or 4 bucks or better yet TRADE it for store credit of about 4-6 bucks. That ends up being cheaper than I would pay via any online source abut then I would end up getting a new film for a net cost of under ten bucks. Sometimes even less. If I tire of a download...there is no way I can trade up..

I'm with you. As a MVNO, Apple could kick Helio's ass. Maybe they are becoming an MVNO and they're leasing their network time from Cingular? That makes sense, don't it?

    Think about it...

    .Mac mobile

The cellphone connects to your .Mac mail, your iCal calendar, and your Address Book.

iChat and text messaging would become one and the same. I could use iChat to talk with a friend on his iPhone, and vice versa. The iPhone has a camera, right? Video conference from the train, anyone?

Buy ringtones at the iTunes store, or just use any song in your library as your ringtone, or write your own ringtone in Garageband.

    Download your podcasts from anywhere.

    (snip)

Yes, this is all conjecture, but it's the only thing that really makes a full-fledged Apple iPhone make sense to me in their overall plan for world domination.

I love the concept! The phone syncing to your .mac account (if you have one) instead of syncing the phone to your Mac directly.

AND... This would then handle the PC users. They could get a .mac account and have access to all these goodness as well.

Sadly, knowing Cingular, and the rest of the network providers, they would charge out the *ss for this capability. I like having the ability with my SE T637 that I surf for free midi files, download them to my mac, connect to the phone via bluetooth and upload the midi's - voila, free ringtones. Sure, some of them are cheesy, but I'm not paying $1 per ringtone.

I'm already (over)paying for a .mac account. I really don't want to pay more money again for a portal between my cellular account and the .mac account. Sadly, that is probably what the reality would be and probably rightfully so - technology isn't free.

I really hope Apple doesn't jump on the camera-phone bandwagon. Seems to go against their philosophy of having devices that do few things but to them far better. And it would make the phone useless to me. But that's just because my employers are sensitive about such devices, with the nuclear reactors and all.

And signing on with Cingular or any other major carrier seems like an even bigger mistake. The only way to truly improve the cell phone user experience is to take them out of the picture and introduce a fair and simple billing system (i.e. MVNO w/ daily flat rate, iTunes-style micropayments).

    Aurichie,

Thank you, for your comments. You make some very valid points. I don't really know much about this whole cloud storage thing. I suppose I really need to read up on that. Is this just another name for something like the commercials I am hearing a lot lately about a company called carbonite? Just an offsite storage method that we pay a yearly fee for? If so, then I could certainly see a real benefit to something like that. I currently have over 132GB of iTunes media. I know it's a lot. I have a huge number of audio books, an even larger Podcast collection and a pretty good amount of music. I will have to look into this cloud storage and see what it offers. Thanks again.

Ikea's doing it because they can get away with it. They know labor laws in the US are there to protect the employer, not the employee. They couldn't do this back home in Sweden.

Who is passing all the anti-union legislation? The right or the left?

Are you referring to the public-sector unions that workers must join and must pay dues to? Because Unions exist everywhere in just about every field. How would the recent push against public sector unions collective bargaining effect this private company? It seems IKEA has the power to mistreat its employees because they're desperate for work. They've even hired a firm to "convince" the workers not to unionize.

As Ugg pointed out, the 'right' has pushed for anti-union policies, including 'right-to-work' status for states like Virginia. That said, I don't think this is a 'right' or 'left' issue per se, but rather a gleeful removal of worker's rights to garner jobs—regardless of the health of a community funded by low-wage, short-term positions.

yes, but I'm looking for evidence that the workers are unable to unionize due to a law that the "right" has passed.

You're on the road shooting, and traveling light. During breaks you upload your CF/SD cards to the new "Aperture.iPod". When you're sitting in a cafe, back at your hotel, or taking a train home you whip out the Aperture.iPod and using the Keywords.plist you uploaded from Aperture before you left you start Stacking, key-wording, and ranking images.

Next day you head to your studio, upload the new images from the Aperture.iPod to your MP 3Ghz (w/16 GB RAM and 3 TB of HDs!), and the first pass of your sorting is already done!

Pros would never do this. Their shots are too valuable to load onto a single device. They would always want to back it up to multiple disks, i.e. MBP & FireWire external drive.

1024 CPUs??? WOW... and I thought I had nasty simulations. :o
Still, dont you think that it is a terrible waste of computing power if the app doesnt take advantage of multiple processors, eventhough it might be very hard to write such an app? This is really not my field and I know far too little to have an opinion, so take it for what it is worth.

It is a terrible waste to have unused CPU power, especially when the application is CPU intense, there are entire fields of research dedicated to optimizing certain types of calculations.... Ive said it before, the core wars will also stop eventually...

Whats wrong with having two dual core processors on one chip? I can understand that the FSB might become a bottleneck but thats not only a issue related to the number of cores/processors is it?

    Color me skeptical.

The current case is pretty good. There's room for improvement questionable assembly of internal components, and above all the switch to a removal bottom rather than a removable top plate meant a serious weakness around the Ethernet and Firewire 800 port. These could easily be fixed by using, say, Indigo thermal pads instead of glopping on paste, and on the outside of the case ditching the Ethernet and Firewire for slimmer alternatives that don't weaken the case *namely a second Thunderbolt port and having three USB ports (3.0 of course) that could support Gigabit Ethernet dongles. And then you recast it in LiquidMetal, and enable customers to decide up front whether they wanted the second drive bay to be blade-SSD or optical, leaving the traditional drive in the first bay.

What you'd have then is the strongest, best designed full-featured laptop case in the business. It's not a major change, but a refinement that adds both strength and versatility to an already good design.

But I fear what Apple has in mind is basically an entire range of Macbook Air laptops. The Air is a fine computer, no doubt, but it's not the portable desktop I want and never can be without supporting two drives and discrete graphics in one way or another.

Can they PLEASE enable Jumbo Frames on the new iMacs? It's ridiculous that in order to properly run a SAN at work we need to buy refurbished iMac Intel Core 2 Duos

What about the Mac Pro? It's way past due, would that come first, before the iMac?

Don't look at the Buyers Guide average release time. The past two Mac Pro upgrades have been around the 15 month mark in between releases. At the current rate we'd be lucky to see one around October.

Interesting, but not sure how good the design is with 2 dual core processors
    back to back.

I agree if Apple decides to use this at all it may be in a new smaller tower, or
Intel will sell this in a more affordale prosumer market for P/C's only.

Apple has gone server class Xeon in their Pro Towers, so it would be going backward
    using Conroes.

    I think you're right arn,

Just because Apple has agreed to use Intel chips, does not mean that every Intel chip
will be good enough to put in an Apple product.

Some people said the same thing back in 2009 when analysts said that Android would overtake the iPhone by 2012 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=662706). :D

Nobody said that back in because there were no Android phones to speak of. This of course changed in and pretty much everyone with half a brain knew that Android would overtake iOS in market share eventually through sheer availability of handsets and carriers. Maybe 3 people on this forum would deny it, but who cares about them.
Now this story is a bit different. Nokia WP7 handsets aren't even announced yet. Most likely they won't have one this year. Instead there are many things that can go wrong. So far, WP7 has been a let-down. And every day they don't catch up on the competition makes it less likely that the platform will succeed.

Looks like this has been widely known (http://www.forensicfocus.com/search-results?cx=partner-pub-1997641209324587%3Av26jsjw0irb&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=consolidated.db+&sa=Search) for a long time. There's an interesting ongoing discussion and analysis on the Forensic Focus website (http://www.forensicfocus.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&printertopic=1&t=6758&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20). For example, this:

As an example of the information recorded under controlled conditions, I joined a single access point on a freshly restored iPad. I had location services turned off and airplane mode switched on. I never moved from my office chair, the phone was also connected to a cell tower using 3G on O2. By just joining the wireless access point my ipad was populated with 379 access point locations and 122 cell tower locations.

From my office I can see at a push 4 wifi access points and some of the cell towers were 22KM away. There is no way I would connect to some of the cell towers or access points recorded from where I am located.
